Tata Teleservices to roll out WLL services in 5 circles

NEW DELHI, India—Tata Teleservices, a basic services provider, will launch its “limited mobility” service using wireless local loop (WLL) technology in five circles, or service areas, in the second half of 2002. It plans to have nearly 2.5 million CDMA subscribers during the next five years.

The company, currently providing basic services in Andhra Pradesh, has a customer base of 42,000 WLL subscribers. The new circles licensed to the company are Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra. “We are looking at entry into Punjab, Haryana and Kerala circles as well,” Managing Director S Ramakrishnan stated at a news conference here.

The company is also keen to rope in a strategic partner.

He said Tata Teleservices is in the process of launching short message service (SMS) for its limited mobility phones in Andhra Pradesh, where its network is being upgraded to CDMA 1x.
