Mobile data players scrape by in 1Q reports

TORONTO—As shown through quarterly reports, the market for mobile data products and services continues slowly to move along, with many players scrapping through with small sales and cutbacks on expenses.

Software and infrastructure provider 724 Solutions reported revenues for the first quarter of $4.5 million, down from the $14 million in the same quarter last year. Net loss was $43.7 million, down from the $58.4 million in the same quarter last year.

Mobile enterprise software provider AvantGo Inc. reported similar results, showing a drop in revenues from $5.3 million in the previous quarter to $4.8 million this quarter. Net loss increased slightly from $4.7 million last quarter to $5 million this quarter.

Internet software vendor InfoSpace Inc. reported revenues of $33.1 million and a net loss of $7.5 million. The company’s wireless business continued to see growth in both subscribers and usage.
