DUBLIN, Ireland—Following similar deals signed earlier this year with Nokia and Siemens, T-Mobile International has chosen Nortel Networks to supply Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) equipment for its third-generation (3G) services scheduled to go live in the second half of 2002.
“The selection of Nortel Networks is another major step toward our European UMTS network,” said Hamid Akhavan, chief technology officer, European operations for T-Mobile International. T-Mobile has already committed to spending hundreds of million of euro with Nokia and Siemens.
Pascal Debon, president, wireless networks, Nortel Networks, claimed the company’s “strong heritage in building data and CDMA networks” makes it ideally suited to deliver new wireless technologies such as UMTS. Nortel has secured 3G infrastructure contracts with Telef
