Nokia, Ericsson take MMS demos to China

STOCKHOLM, Sweden—Both Nokia and Ericsson said they have demonstrated what they described as the first inter-operator live demonstration of multimedia messaging service (MMS) technology with leading Chinese operators.

Ericsson demonstrated its technology using its Sony Ericsson T68I handset in Guangzhou over the networks of China Mobile with its counterpart, SmarTone Mobile Communications.

Nokia said it used the Nokia 7650 phone over GPRS networks of three operators, including Beijing Mobile, Hong Kong CSL and Fujian Mobile.

“MMS presages a revolution in mobile communications. While data services are seen as an important growth factor in the global mobile industry, there have been no real compelling consumer applications until now,” said Douglas Li, chief executive officer of SmarTone.
