TOKYO—Ericsson Japan on 5 June said it would develop a roaming system for wireless local area network (WLAN) providers. In Japan, some carriers, including NTT Communications, have launched commercial-based WLAN services. It is widely expected that WLAN services based on the 2.4 GHz band will take off in Japan soon.
However, under the current system, the service area is limited to the coverage of the user’s contracted service provider. Ericsson Japan, the Japanese business unit of Ericsson, decided to develop the roaming system, which will let users enjoy a WLAN service outside the service area of the contracted service provider.
