NTT to launch 5 GHz wireless service in July

TOKYO—NTT Communications, a long-distance and international business unit of NTT Group, announced it would launch wireless service based on the 5 GHz band in July on an experimental basis.

Under current regulation, carriers are allowed to provide 5 GHz band wireless service inside buildings. But the government is planning to open the 5 GHz band for open field wireless services. NTT Communications on 11 June submitted an application to the government seeking a license for the service targeting the open field. Once it obtains the license, the NTT firm is going to launch the experimental service in Tokyo.

The service will provide up to 36 Megabits per second (Mbps) data transmission service for users within 300 meters from each base station. NTT Communications has been providing wireless local area network (WLAN) service based on the 2.4 GHz band.
