Summus, Snapfish agree to co-market wireless photo application

NEW YORK-Summus Inc., Raleigh, N.C., and Snapfish, San Francisco, will share revenue under a multi-year contract announced July 1 to develop and co-market Snapfish Mobile, a new wireless photo application powered by Summus’ BlueFuel multimedia architecture.

Offering consumers the ability to access their photographs on the Snapfish network via their wireless phones, Snapfish Mobile is targeted for release “by major wireless carrier networks beginning in the third quarter of this year,” the companies said. Future releases of the application will permit the same kind of access from handheld computers.

Under terms of the agreement, Summus and Snapfish will collaborate to develop the Snapfish Mobile application for use on BREW, J2ME and Pocket PC platforms. The two companies also will work together on development of future image functionality, including instant notification of new photos in consumers’ online accounts and enabling users to capture images on their camera phone and store them on the Snapfish Web site.

When Snapfish’s 3 million customers send their film to the company, they get a full set of prints on Kodak paper and a password-protected online album they can use to edit, organize and share their photos. Digital camera users can get Kodak paper prints and take advantage of free online sharing and unlimited storage, Snapfish said.

Summus develops means to enable faster and more efficient delivery and access to multimedia content from wireless devices that are used by the general public and the military.
