DoCoMo loses domain conflict with AT&T

TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo, the largest mobile operator in Japan, lost a legal battle with its U.S. partner AT&T Wireless Services over a domain name issue. NTT DoCoMo in April lodged a complaint against AT&T Wireless at WIPO requesting an injunction of using a domain name that AT&T Wireless is using.

AT&T Wireless in March 2002 registered the “imode.biz” domain name, based on the alliance among NTT DoCoMo, AT&T Corporation and AT&T Wireless concluded in December 2000. NTT DoCoMo brought the case to the WIPO in April claiming that AT&T Wireless is not authorized to use the domain name.

The arbitration center at the WIPO however turned down the complaint lodged by NTT DoCoMo and determined AT&T Wireless has been granted the right to use the domain name.
