Handspring 4Q earnings solid

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-Treo maker Handspring Inc. announced relatively solid earnings for its fourth quarter, including evidence that its line of advanced personal digital assistant/mobile phone devices are continuing to gain momentum.

The company’s stock was up about 5 percent after the news to about $1.88 per share.

The company reported revenues of $49 million and a net loss of $15.4 million. The company lowered its guidance slightly for the coming quarters, but said it expects to reach profitability by June of next year.

Further, Handspring said it shipped about 93,000 Treo Communicators to date, an important number as the company places more and more of its expectations on the wireless devices.

“I am pleased that our Treo product family is contributing to revenue and increased gross margins,” said Donna Dubinsky, the company’s chief executive officer. “We are executing well on product development, carrier business development and expense control.”
