JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-MTN is reported to be urging its subscribers to ignore a scam involving short message service (SMS) messages currently circulating among GSM subscribers in Nigeria. The message alleges that MTN and other mobile operators have joined for a special trial that offers users a 500 niara (US$3.84) credit for each subscriber that they forward the message to.
Afam Edozie, chief marketing and strategy officer at MTN Nigeria, said the company wanted to urge Nigerians to disregard the message because MTN neither sent nor authorized the message to be sent. Edozie added that the company is not engaged in any so-called special trial offer and that all official SMS messages from the network would originate from the 0803 number.
