TASHKENT, Uzbekistan-Uzbek TDMA carrier Uzdunrobita respected its promised schedule and launched a GSM 900/1800 MHz network in the third quarter of 2002. Uzdunrobita received a GSM license in March 2002 and then signed a contract with Ericsson for the supply of the necessary equipment.
“A fast launch of an advanced mobile communications network into technical operation is another proof of the reliability of Uzdunrobita and its serious attitude to the clients,” said board Chairman Bryan Bowen.
The network initially covered the capital of Tashkent, but the GSM license of the carrier spreads to the whole territory of the Central Asian republic, and Uzdunrobita promised to expand to other regions in the future.
Ericsson supplied a switchboard, a controller, base stations, the MINI-LINK radio relay system and other equipment. The cost of the deal was not disclosed.
Uzdunrobita has been operating since 1992, and its TDMA network covers the whole of Uzbekistan. It accounts for 35 percent of Uzbek mobile-phone users.
