AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands-Royal Philips Electronics and Sony will jointly develop a new near-field radio-frequency technology called Near Field Communication, which will enable short-range communication between mobile phones, digital cameras, personal digital assistants (PDAs), laptops and game consoles, the companies announced.
The NFC technology will operate in the 13.56 MHz frequency band at speeds up to 212 kilobits per second (kbps).
Philips and Sony said they will promote NFC as an open standard.
