BEIJING-Starting on 1 October, China’s telecom carriers will be allowed to adjust prices for value-added services. The Ministry of Information Industry (MII) will continue to regulate basic services, such as fixed-line and cell-phone call charges.
Mobile value-added services include information services, short message service (SMS), mobile secretary and tracking a caller’s location.
Market pricing will, however, not necessarily lead to price cuts.
Yang Peifang, a telecom expert at the China Academy of Telecom Research, told the China Daily Business Weekly the MII did not go far enough and should have also adjusted unreasonably high mobile call fees.
