NEW DELHI, India—State-owned telecom operator Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) will soon launch GSM services in the island nation through its subsidiary, Mobitel.
SLT recently took full control of Mobitel, after taking over stakes held by Telstra. Company Chairman Tilanga Sumathipala was quoted in Sri Lankan media as saying SLT will become the country’s number-one mobile operator within three years.
He said SLT is planning an infusion of US$70 million to upgrade the infrastructure of Mobitel during the next two years and plans to soon establish a fully functional GSM network. Mobitel currently offers TDMA mobile service.
