BUENOS AIRES, Argentina-Chile, Argentina and Puerto Rico top a ranking of competition in the telecommunication sector of Latin America in a survey carried out by consultancy firm Pyramid Research.
The three countries are the only markets with scores of 3.75 in the mobile ranking, where 4 is the highest score achievable and 1 is the lowest. The ranking includes the number of competitors operating, the market share of each of the players, and pricing factors in the market.
On a general basis, including local telephony, long-distance, mobile, corporate data and Internet, of 18 countries in Latin America, Chile received top marks with a score of 2.88, followed closely by Argentina and Puerto Rico, with scores of 2.74 and 2.63 respectively.
Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua obtained the lowest values in mobile rankings, with 1, 1 and 1.25 respectively. The three countries “come out on the bottom due to monopolies in both the fixed and mobile markets.”
On a general level, they also score the lowest points, followed by Uruguay, despite the fact that Uruguay has a higher count of fixed telephony penetration in the region. The ranking exclusively measured the levels of competition, but disregarded market penetration of each service.
