DUBLIN, Ireland-Having returned T-Mobile to a pre-eminent position in the German mobile sector, Kai-Uwe Ricke has been handed the much greater challenge of reviving the fortunes of Deutsche Telekom as the company prepares to reveal record losses.
Ricke is well regarded within the company, following his success at T-Mobile. In May 2001, he was appointed to the board of management of Deutsche Telekom with responsibility for the company’s mobile and online businesses, having served as T-Mobile International chairman since February 2000.
He will assume his new role 15 November, succeeding interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Helmut Sihler. One of the outgoing CEO’s last acts was to tell a meeting of employees that selling T-Mobile USA (formerly known as VoiceStream) is no longer on the company’s agenda, although he refused to rule out a merger with another U.S. mobile operator.
