DALLAS-In a move to push for Linux-based wireless devices, chip maker Texas Instruments said it will work to embed a Linux platform from MontaVista Software Inc. into its OMAP application processors for wireless handsets.
“Because of its flexibility and ease of use, Linux is becoming essential for many embedded applications,” said David Potts, worldwide director of applications for TI’s OMAP platform. “Working with MontaVista Software and Texas Instruments lets software developers leverage MontaVista Linux with its full-featured, open and rich development environment to build upon the high performance and power-efficiency of TI’s OMAP processors.”
However, the deal doesn’t mark the first time Linux would be introduced in wireless; Sharp Electronics’ new personal digital assistant runs on the platform.
