Telecom Italia begins Wi-Fi trials

ROME-Telecom Italia began trials this week of a public Wi-Fi service operating at 2.4 GHz. Italy’s largest fixed and mobile operator will trial the service in public locations in Rome and Milan in conjunction with Megabeam, Italy’s first wireless Internet service provider.

The wireless local area network service will initially be launched at airports and hotels, with trials extended to additional locations, the company said. About 3,000 Telecom Italia customers can currently use the service for broadband Internet access. The operator said the six-month trial will allow it to test the technology and applications.
