DUBLIN, Calif.-Sybase Inc., which makes software that integrates businesses’ platforms, databases and applications, announced it will acquire wireless enterprise company AvantGo Inc. in a $38 million cash merger. The deal is expected to be completed during the first quarter of next year.
Sybase will move AvantGo into its iAnywhere Solutions subsidiary. Sybase said the combined companies will be able to offer an end-to-end mobile business platform for wirelessly enabling enterprise Web content, corporate data and applications.
“This acquisition teams the common vision and technologies of two m-Business leaders,” said Terry Stepien, president of iAnywhere Solutions. “Building on our mobile database leadership, this union will enable iAnywhere Solutions to fuel new growth and pioneer innovative solutions in the emerging mobile middleware market.”
Through the deal, iAnywhere said it plans to open its mobile database to enterprise Web developers, expand the reach of AvantGo’s products and applications through Sybase’s worldwide channels, and continue to operate the My AvantGo service, which currently has more than 7 million registered users.
