Siemens’ sales down 10 percent

NEW YORK-Siemens AG reported a 10-percent decrease in first-quarter sales, to $20.28 billion, and a decline in net income to $561 million from $579 million during the same period a year ago. Earnings per share dropped to 63 cents from 66 cents.

Siemens sold a record 11 million mobile phones during the first quarter, which ended Dec. 31, and handset sales totaled $1.41 billion. However, this strong showing was offset by declines in the Mobile Networks division, which caused sales in the company’s overall Information and Communications Mobile division to experience a 9-percent decline, to $3.1 billion, compared with the year-ago quarter.
