Nortel settles patent dispute with Ciena

TORONTO-Nortel Networks Ltd. said it has settled its patent dispute with Ciena Corp. in which the Brampton-Ontario-based company sued the defendant for infringement and misappropriation of trade secrets.

The infringement was reportedly committed by Optical Networks Inc., which Ciena took over. Ciena will pay $25 million to Nortel as part of the settlement, and Nortel has granted it a license under certain patents.

“Nortel Networks and Ciena have agreed not to sue each other for patent infringement for two years, during which time they will seek to negotiate a cross-license arrangement between them,” said both companies in a press release.
