Cellular traffic increases by 55 percent in Chile

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina-Although Chile has more cellular users than fixed lines, cellular traffic is at almost 100 minutes per month per client in contrast to the 650 minutes monthly used by each fixed telephony customer, according to a recent report by the Subsecretary of Telecommunications (Subtel). The government agency compared telecommunications traffic between the months of July 2001 and July 2002.

However, the report showed that between June 2001 and June 2002, mobile traffic increased 55.4 percent, while fixed network use declined 7.7 percent in local-call traffic, 12.5 percent in national long-distance calls and 1.5 percent in calls made from fixed telephone lines to mobiles.

The report by Subtel stated that in June 2002, there were 5.7 million mobile customers in Chile and 3.5 million fixed telephone clients, an increase of 39 percent and 2.7 percent respectively compared with the same month of the previous year.
