NEC releases GPRS handset, applications

TOKYO-NEC Corp. will release its new e525 GPRS/WAP mobile handset at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, next week. The phone features a fold-form design, built-in antenna and integrated camera. It also includes two color displays, three picture formats, MMS capability, a picture phonebook and a 40-channel polyphonic ringer.

NEC also plans to demonstrate a series of mobile Internet application software at the show. The new applications include:

  • the Mobile Internet Platform (VS-7800), which delivers smooth and fast implementation of WAP-based services;
  • the Mobile Digital Rights Management System (VS-7810), which encrypts digital content and software applications;
  • the Total Recommendation system (VS-7820), which offers customized portal sites, shopping sites and call center applications;
  • the Markup Language Conversion Gateway (VS-7830), which converts content written in markup languages into formats displayable on mobile-phone browsers;
  • and the Online Photo Sharing System allows users to store multimedia albums on handsets.
