Hutch rolls out CDMA service in Bangkok

NEW DELHI, India-Hutchison CAT Wireless MultiMedia, a joint venture of Hutchison and the Thai government’s Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT), has formally rolled out its CDMA mobile-phone service in Bangkok and the central provinces.

However, CAT’s network expansion project in areas other than Bangkok and the central provinces has been stalled by the new Information and Communications Technology Minister Surapong Suebwonglee. CAT had provisionally selected a consortium of Nortel and Real Time for the expansion project.

Hutchison CAT Wireless MultiMedia is offering its services under the Hutch brand using CDMA 1x technology.

Meanwhile, leading GSM player AIS said it reached a subscriber base of more than 10 million at the end of 2002. More than 8 million of the AIS subscribers use its prepaid service.
