TOKYO-KDDI on Wednesday announced it would reduce the communications fee from a fixed-line telephone to a mobile phone by 25 percent starting 21 April. Due to the price cut, the communications fee from a fixed line to mobile will be reduced from 120 yen (US$1.02) for three minutes to 90 yen (US$0.77) for three minutes.
In Japan, mobile carriers are authorized to decide communications charges for calls from fixed lines to mobile phones. Therefore, fees from fixed lines to mobiles are more expensive than charges from mobile phones to fixed lines.
After telecom venture Heisei Denden lodged a complaint to the Telecom Ministry criticizing the higher fees for the fixed-line-to-mobile calls, the issue has been winning attention in the industry. NTT DoCoMo has already reduced its charges, and J-Phone, a Vodafone company in Japan, is expected to announce price reductions for its calls from fixed lines to mobile phones.
