Three prequalify for PCS license in Honduras

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina-The National Telecommunications Commission in Honduras prequalified BellSouth, Entel Chile and Megatel-EMCE for the band A personal communications services (PCS) cellular telephone license for which 18 companies had presented proposals in November last year. The prequalified companies have until 25 April to present their offers for the license, which has a base price of US$5.5 million, for 30 megahertz on the 1850-1865 and 1930-1945 frequency band.

A report by consultancy Convergencia Latina stated the base price “will not reach the half-way of the original figure when the process began, which was going to be around the US$14 million mark. However, it is in line with the Latin American panorama, which has been overshadowed by the PCS licenses in Colombia and Ecuador, where the winners in both cases were state-controlled fixed line telephony companies.”

According to the Convergencia Latina report, out of the three prequalified companies, BellSouth operates in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panam
