DALLAS-Nokia Corp. announced it is continuing its mobile-commerce trial with credit card company MasterCard International through a new trial in Nokia’s home base of Irving, Texas.
The market trial will launch this month and will allow mobile-phone users to use their phones to pay for goods at retailers including Rockfish Seafood Grill, Corner Bakery Cafe, Jason’s Deli, Wolf Camera and Chevron.
Under the system, Nokia phones include a contactless chip and a radio-frequency circuit, which register with MasterCard readers using MasterCard’s PayPass proximity payment technology.
Although mobile-commerce has long been discussed in the wireless industry, most efforts have met with failure. Indeed, many U.S. banks have shut down their m-commerce services, and most m-commerce companies have shut down or focused their business elsewhere. However, mobile-commerce services seem to be enjoying some success in Asia and Europe, as several wireless carriers have launched payment services.
