TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo Inc. released its first dual-network third-generation handset, the FOMA N2701, which is backward compatible with DoCoMo’s current-generation network. The handset goes on sale nationwide June 11.
One reason for DoCoMo’s slow initial 3G uptake was its lack of coverage and ability for 3G subscribers to roam on the carrier’s current network.
The new phone can be set to operate exclusively in either 2G or 3G mode or set to automatically switch between the networks according to signal strength.
Last month, DoCoMo released pricing plans for the new 2G/3G roaming service.
DoCoMo also announced a new dual-mode i-mode service called i-mode My Box for easy links to customized Web pages. The service makes it easier for users to access the widest possible choice of favorite sites.
