German vendor Siemens AG said it has signed two contracts, one for EDGE technology. Siemens announced a deal with Malaysian mobile operator DiGi Telecommunications to supply it with GSM, GPRS and EDGE equipment. The German equipment maker described the deal as the first EDGE order in Asia. “Siemens is also upgrading DiGi’s GSM/GPRS infrastructure with EDGE technology,” said the vendor. The German vendor also signed a deal to supply GSM gear to Indian operator Escotel Mobile Communications Ltd. “With a market share of 14 percent, Siemens Information and Communications Mobile ranks third as a supplier of mobile infrastructure in India,” it said. Siemens did not disclose the value of the Malaysian contract, but said the Indian order is worth $35.3 million.
UGANDA
Alcatel said it won two contracts to supply Uganda Telecom with GSM equipment for radio access and core network infrastructure. The value of the contracts was not disclosed.
IRELAND
Irish Broadband will use Navini Networks Inc.’s Ripwave wireless wide area broadband equipment to provide broadband services to customers in Ireland. Beginning in June, Irish Broadband plans to deploy Ripwave base stations in communities in the Dublin area. “Ireland is woefully behind many other countries in terms of broadband penetration,” said Paul Doody, managing director of Irish Broadband.
INDIA
Indian software company Subex Systems said Bharti Cellular, India’s largest mobile operator, will deploy Subex’s fraud management system. The Ranger product helps carriers curb fraud using subscriber profiling and analytical capabilities. The software company said that with the Bharti contract, its Ranger product has now been deployed by all the major Indian private operators, including Hutch, Idea Cellular and BPL Mobile.
