WASHINGTON-Nokia Corp. reached an agreement with the Federal Communications Commission to fix a glitch in one of its U.S. mobile phones that does not meet the FCC’s enhanced 911 requirements, an agreement that includes Nokia paying out a “voluntary contribution” of $60,000.
Nokia first discovered the problem in its 6385 phone late last year. The company stopped selling the phone and alerted the FCC of the problem. According to FCC documents, the phone did not properly meet E911 guidelines that require emergency calls to switch to alternate networks if the primary network is not available. The FCC launched an investigation into the glitch earlier this year and said it reached an agreement with Nokia to fix the problem.
Under the agreement, Nokia said it will pay $60,000 and will work to repair the glitch and its testing process. The company will also offer free fixes to the 15,000 users who purchased the phone prior to Nokia discovering the glitch.
