AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands-The Bluetooth Special Interest Group announced that the Bluetooth specification version 1.2 is in its final testing phase. The new specification includes a number of improvements compared with the previous 1.1 specification designed to improve the reliability and performance of wireless technologies using the unlicensed 2.4 GHz spectrum band, as well as overall user quality and security.
The improvements include adaptive frequency-hopping capabilities, which the Bluetooth SIG said enables more efficient transmission within the spectrum; enhanced voice processing, designed to improve the quality of voice connections using error-detection methods; enhanced quality of service through better traffic management scheduling, which will increase the performance of multipoint implementations; and an anonymity mode that can mask the physical address of a radio and prevent identity attacks and snooping.
The Bluetooth SIG also said the new specification would be backward compatible with the previous 1.1 specification, and according to industry sources, should be commercially available during the fourth quarter.
