Carriers continue short-code voting initiatives

Verizon Wireless announced its subscribers will be able to vote on the selection of the most valuable player in the WNBA All-Star game using a short code voting system.

Fans can pre-register for the wireless voting directly from their Verizon Wireless phones by sending the TXT message “MVP” to 9622. Fans can also log on and pre-register for the voting on WNBA.com. The game is scheduled for July 12.

In other short code news, marketing company GoldPocket announced it will set up a cross-carrier short code service for TV station Fox as part of the promotion of its new “Banzai” reality game show. Subscribers from AT&T Wireless Services Inc., T-Mobile USA Inc. and others will be able to vote on various aspects of the game show by sending in short code text messages.

The moves come as wireless carriers work with the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association to set up an industry-wide short code system. Such services to date have involved either single carriers or loose agreements among several carriers.
