Sprint hits analysts’ targets for customer additions

Sprint PCS continued to improve on last year’s difficult quarterly results, posting 360,000 net customer additions during the second quarter of this year, which was a 17-percent increase compared with the 308,000 net customer additions the carrier posted last year and in line with analysts’ expectations. In addition, Sprint PCS said it added 177,000 reseller net additions, and its affiliates signed up an additional 80,000 subscribers during the second quarter.

Sprint PCS also exceeded customer churn estimates, reporting 2.4 percent churn during the second quarter compared with 2.9 percent last year and 3.1 percent during the first quarter of this year. Sprint PCS also reported average revenue per user of $62 during the second quarter, which the carrier said included nearly $2 in data ARPU, compared with $61 last year and $59 during the first quarter of this year.

Total operating revenues increased slightly from just more than $3 billion during the second quarter of 2002 to nearly $3.1 billion this year. The increase helped drop net losses from $173 million last year, or 17 cents per share, to $95 million this year, or 9 cents per share.
