Iridium launches short messaging service

ARLINGTON, Va.-Iridium Satellite L.L.C. said Aug. 4 it has launched short messaging service to its customers that use Iridium 9505 handsets and 9522 L-band receivers.

Subscribers can send and receive up to 160 characters per message to and from anywhere in the world. Iridium plans to make the service compatible with mobile phones later this year.

Messages can also be sent to e-mail addresses and stored for up to eight days.
