China Unicom to trial GSM1x handset

SAN DIEGO-China Unicom will conduct the first handset trial of Qualcomm Inc.’s GSM1x technology, allowing testers to roam from GSM to CDMA networks.

Kyocera Corp. supplied the handset, based on its KZ850 model. The single mode, BREW-enabled GSM1x handset combines a GSM service interface with CDMA2000 next-generation services using a GSM subscriber identity module card.

“Kyocera’s decision to integrate Qualcomm’s GSM1x technology into its handsets further demonstrates the validity of this solution and will allow Kyocera to deliver a new option for GSM operators worldwide,” said George Mansho, senior vice president of corporate global development for Qualcomm. “Kyocera’s GSM1x handset helps fulfill GSM operators’ need to provide differentiated services, offering CDMA2000 value-added services to their subscribers while maintaining compatibility with GSM-MAP networks and SIM cards.”
