Qwest to do away with wireless wide-area calling

DENVER-Qwest Communications International Inc., which recently announced it would transfer its nearly 1 million wireless customers to Sprint PCS’ network, is reportedly eliminating wide-area calling for its wireless customers. Now, any call to a different area code will be a long-distance call even if it’s made to the same market.

Qwest told the Associated Press that the move was necessary to allow customers to keep their same phone numbers when changing carriers, which is expected to be possible when wireless local number portability is implemented later this year.
