Numerex sells messaging division to Wireless Services Corp.

ATLANTA-Telemetry company Numerex Corp. sold its Data1Source messaging service to messaging company Wireless Services Corp., a move Numerex said would help it focus on its growing wireless telemetry business. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are confident that this transaction makes good sense for both companies,” said Stratton Nicolaides, Numerex’s chairman and chief executive officer. “It allows Numerex to better focus its resources on growing its core wireless telemetry business and places Data1Source in the hands of a group whose focus is wireless messaging and enhanced digital services. We expect that WSC will be able to leverage Data1Source to bring new and valued services to the mobile messaging market and to the Data1Source customer base. We intend to work closely with WSC to ensure a rapid and successful transition.”

WSC offers a range of messaging products and manages the text messaging interoperability services for Nextel Communications Inc. Numerex’s Data1Source is a messaging service for wireless carriers, offering Web- and e-mail-based text messaging, SMS Touch-Tone paging and subscriber-customized Internet content services.

Numerex’s sale of Data1Source, combined with the company’s $5 million purchase of Cingular Wireless’ 40 percent share in Cellemetry L.L.C., further positions Numerex in the telemetry business. Indeed, it seems the strategy is working; Numerex recently announced that the nation’s largest automotive dealership network purchased its telemetry product for use in more than 300 dealership locations.
