AUSTIN, Texas-Motorola Inc. said it updated its GSM/GPRS handset platform to include additional security and software features, moves that come as more players enter the handset platform and reference design market.
Motorola said the new version of its i.250 Innovative Convergence platform includes “quad-band” operation, which the company said allows handsets to work in wireless networks in North America, Europe and Asia. Further, the new platform features an enhanced security framework, video/imaging and graphics capabilities and software such as a WAP 2.0 browser and Java MIDP 2.0.
Motorola, Ericsson and others offer mobile-phone platforms, which include reference designs, chipsets and other phone components, for sale to original equipment and design companies.
