KDDI plans to release 2-megapixel camera phone

TOKYO-Japanese mobile operator KDDI Corp. plans to release what is likely the world’s first camera phone that features a camera resolution of 2 megapixels.

Casio Computer Co. Ltd. built the phone for the Japanese carrier. KDDI has largely led the worldwide camera-phone market and currently sells a variety of camera phones.

Most camera phones feature dim resolutions, but several Asian carriers have recently introduced camera phones with resolutions of 1 megapixel and above. Analysts have pointed to such devices as a major milestone for the rapidly growing camera-phone market, as the phones feature resolutions comparable with those of traditional digital cameras.
