Handset vendors ramp up holiday offerings

The world’s handset makers are ramping up their holiday season devices, with Motorola Inc., Siemens and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. joining the fray.

Motorola and Siemens both released new W-CDMA devices for the European market. Motorola will sell its new A835 through operator 3. The device features video calling, Bluetooth, an MP3 player and assisted global positioning system technology. The device will be available this month.

Siemens’ new device features many of the same advanced functions, including video calling and Bluetooth and will be available in November.

Finally, Samsung introduced the first of several GSM-based devices scheduled for the holiday season. The company’s x105 and e105 are now available through T-Mobile USA Inc. The devices feature America Online’s Instant Messenger, multimedia messaging services and ring tones.

Finally, Handspring Inc. has begun selling its Treo 600 through Sprint PCS.
