SAO PAULO, Brazil-Nortel Networks Ltd. said it will implement third-generation wireless data networks for Brazilian operator Vivo in the west-central and southern regions of Brazil. The value of the CDMA2000 1x network equipment contract was not released.
Nortel will be the exclusive provider for both core and access solutions for the state of Rio Grande do Sul and will supply core networks in the cities of Brasilia and Goiania, overlaying Vivo’s existing TDMA network with 1x technology.
Vivo is a joint venture of Portugal Telecom and Telefonica Moviles and is Brazil’s largest operator with more than 17 million customers and nearly 48-percent market share in the country.
