BEIJING-UTStarcom and Panasonic Mobile Communications Inc. said they have entered into a joint venture to design, develop and manufacture third-generation equipment, focusing on Internet Protocol core networking solutions.
The JV, which is known as Universal Communications Technology Hangzhou, will seek to provide radio-access solutions in China and later expand to the rest of the world.
In the deal, Panasonic will bring its 3G radio products and technologies and its leverage with Japanese operators. UTStarcom will provide its expertise in 3G IP core network technologies like broadband, PAS and soft switch in the Chinese market.
“Partnering with UTStarcom will give us insight into their expertise as the leader in 3G core networking and soft switches, and enable us to gain entry into a customer base of the world’s largest innovator and supplier of PAS wireless systems,” said Yasuo Katsura, president of Panasonic Mobile.
