Eastman Kodak Co. reported agreements with Cingular Wireless L.L.C. and Nokia Corp. to provide mobile imaging services and initiatives designed to help customers get more out of their camera-enabled handsets. The agreements center around Kodak’s Mobile Service that will allow Cingular subscribers to store and access their mobile images directly through their handsets for $3 per month. In addition, Kodak said it will offer digital image printing from handsets using Bluetooth or infrared technologies at its 24,000 retail kiosks across the country in January.
Siemens AG posted a fourth-quarter net profit of $847.6 million, or 94 cents per share, beating analysts’ expectations. For the fiscal year, it basked in a net income of $2.8 billion, representing a 47-percent increase from $1.94 billion a year ago. In its mobile business, overall sales totaled $3.1 billion, comparable to a year ago, although orders rose 12 percent. Its infrastructure business increased its profits to $70 million, while handset sales jumped to $1.4 billion. “Following the volume declines of the past year, which were substantially driven by currency translation, our goal in fiscal 2004 is to restore growth and win market share,” said Heinrich v. Pierer, Siemens chief executive officer.
Nokia Corp. said it has signed a deal to supply EDGE equipment for Global Telecom in the Philippines. Global Telecom will deploy the services in Metro Manila. The actual date of the rollout was not disclosed. The carrier had completed trials earlier this year. Nokia also will provide professional services such as project management, implementation, network planning and optimization. “This will enhance our customers’ experience with advanced mobile multimedia services such as MMS, downloads of Java games, icons, screensavers, ringtones and more,” said Gerardo C. Ablaza, president and chief executive officer of Globe Telecom.
Sun Microsystems and Siemens are inviting students worldwide to participate in the Java Masters 2004 competition. Participants are asked to develop innovative Java applications for Siemens M55, MC60 and SX1 mobile phones.
