Microsoft Corp. scored another major distribution deal for its mobile-phone software with Verizon Wireless, the nation’s largest wireless carrier, announcing the availability of the Samsung SCH-i600 with Microsoft’s Smartphone operating system.
Verizon will sell the high-powered clamshell phone for $400 with a two-year service agreement of $40 or greater, along with the carrier’s personal digital assistant/smart phone unlimited NationalAccess plan.
The Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. device features Pocket Outlook, Pocket Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger, Microsoft Windows Media Player and ActiveSync. It also features an SD I/O Expansion Slot for memory expansion cards. The new device allows users to synchronize information directly from their desktop PCs as well as over the air with Wireless Sync from Verizon Wireless. The i600’s single inbox allows customers to view all incoming e-mails, voicemails and text messages in one area.
Interestingly, the device will also include a dedicated Web site for applications from application warehouse company Handango. The site, www.handango.com/verizonwireless will allow users to download a range of applications to the i600 phone. Handango has long been a Microsoft application partner.
Through Microsoft’s deal with Verizon Wireless, the software giant gains another major distribution partner for its Windows Mobile operating system. Just last month, AT&T Wireless Services Inc. began selling Motorola Inc.’s smart phone using Microsoft software. Microsoft also counts a variety of international carriers selling its devices, including longtime partner Orange.
“The i600 is the ultimate, all-in-one tool for busy professionals,” said Bill Stone, vice president of marketing for Verizon Wireless. `The foundation of Verizon Wireless’ nationwide network in combination with business-essential tools from Microsoft, Samsung’s design innovation and Handango’s downloadable content offering takes office mobility to a new level. The i600 will become the new standard for all-in-one wireless devices.”
