ORANGEBURG N.Y.-Verizon Wireless said it has invested nearly $1 billion during the past three years to enhance its digital wireless network in the New York metropolitan area.
The announcement comes several weeks after city officials asked cell-phone users to report dead spots in cellular coverage throughout the city.
The company has added more than 60 new cell sites in the area this year, built a new switching office, and reinforced its emergency preparedness plan. Since 2001, Verizon has more than doubled its wireless network capacity in the New York metropolitan area.
Verizon said its network enhancements in New York have benefited customers in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan, including downtown and midtown, near City Hall, the East Side, the West Side, Washington Heights, the financial district and Washington Square Park. Verizon also provides service in tunnels, including Queens Midtown, Brooklyn Battery, Holland and Lincoln, along with the tunnels into and out of Penn Station to serve train commuters.
