Altera develops reference design for OBSAI specs

SAN JOSE, Calif.-Altera Corp. said it has developed a reference design that conforms to the interface specification of the Open Base Station Architecture Initiative.

The design, known as the Stratix GX FPGA line, has flexibility to “address macro, micro and pico configurations,” according to the company. It is a radio-to-baseband interface specification that brings a variety of layers into one device, said the company.

OBSAI, which comprises about 70 members, is led by Nokia Corp. and claims to pursue an open standards initiative for base stations. But it is at odds with the Ericsson-led Common Public Radio Interface, which also pursues the same claims.

“An open market will substantially reduce the development effort and costs that have been traditionally associated with creating new radio base stations,” said Jukka Klemettila, chairperson of the OBSAI.
