BT expands Wi-Fi network to 500 McDonald's

LONDON-British Telecommunications plc said it will expand its Wi-Fi network to 500 U.K. McDonald’s restaurants during the next few months. Plans call for BT Openzone access points to be installed in McDonald’s flagship and drive-through restaurants by the end of March.

The deals takes the number of BT Openzone sites to more than 2,000.

“These sites will also help to provide easily accessible locations where the large number of people who haven’t yet tried Wi-Fi can log on for free and try before they buy during Wireless Broadband Week this month,” said Steve Andrews, BT’s managing director for products and enterprises.

Wireless Broadband Week, starting Jan. 26, will allow anyone with suitable laptops or personal digital assistants to try the service free.

McDonald’s already has Wi-Fi agreements covering about 400 U.S. restaurants in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Philadelphia.
