DALLAS-Texas Instruments said it has unveiled what it calls the first complete EDGE smart-phone chipset and reference design.
The product, known as TCS3500, is buoyed by the OMAP processor and supports all leading mobile operating systems, including Symbian, Microsoft Windows Mobile, Linux and Palmsource, according to Tom Pollard, worldwide marketing director of the chipset unit at TI.
TI said the solution has three times the data throughput of current GSM/GPRS devices. Carriers have launched EDGE networks in the United States and other countries, and vendors are trying to differentiate themselves in both handsets and chip solutions.
“By leveraging the proven success of predecessor OMAP30-based GSM reference designs, we are able to offer our customers a complete smart-phone reference design highly integrated with all the components required to build full-featured handsets on the EDGE standard,” said Rick Kornfeld, vice president and general manager of TI’s wireless chipset business.
