Pyramid reports that many Caribbean countries have chosen to liberalize their telecommunications sector, opening opportunities for both vendors and operators.
Three players currently serve the Jamaican mobile market: Cable & Wireless (C&W), Digicel and Oceanic Digital Communications.
Because of difficult competition, operators are engaging in aggressive pricing and marketing strategies to capture subscribers and grow market share. Irish-backed telecommunications company Digicel, however, is well-positioned to become the No. 1 mobile operator in Jamaica and No. 2 in the rest of the Caribbean behind C&W, according to Pyramid.
