AWS, Rural Cellular complete exchange agreement

REDMOND, Wash.-AT&T Wireless Services Inc. said it had completed an exchange of wireless operations with Rural Cellular Corp. in Oregon, Mississippi and Alabama.

The exchange agreement called for AWS to assume Rural Cellular’s TDMA operations in the Lincoln, Oregon-4 market between Salem and Eugene, Ore., serving 35,000 subscribers and covering 226,000 potential customers in the communities of Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon, Lincoln City and Newport. AWS said it plans to build out the market with GSM/GPRS services later this year.

Rural Cellular assumed AWS’ operations in the Dothan, Ala.; Tupelo and Columbus, Miss., markets serving 16,000 subscribers and covering 732,000 pops adjacent to Rural Cellular’s existing South Region. Rural Cellular also received personal communications services licenses covering 2.4 million total pops in portions of its South, Midwest and Northwest regions.

AWS reported earlier this week that it had completed a previously announced acquisition of wireless properties in Texas from U.S. Cellular Corp. for $95 million.
